Playing a musical instrument and being part of a band opens up so many opportunities for youngsters – and this summer has seen Dobcross Youth Band players really embody that.

Euphonium player Emma Naylor and bass player Lucy Williams have been having an exciting time – you may well have seen them on television!

Lucy was featured on the Sky Arts trailer for their Battle of the Brass Bands series, which was screened at the end of August. She was among a group of our senior players who took part in a massed brass performance a few months ago for the show.

The first episode was based around Whit Friday and we were also pleased to see our good friends The Fairey Band on screen – we’ve put on a joint concert with Fairey at Uppermill Civic Hall for the last two years, and will be playing alongside them again on Saturday 7 December.

Meanwhile Emma can be spotted playing her euphonium in a fantastic new advert for Heinz baked beans, another opportunity that came her way through her involvement with the band.

It is great to see our players’ confidence in performing on TV as well as at some amazing concert venues – in the last year or so, we’ve played at Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, Leeds City Hall and at the Menin Gate in Belgium, to name just a few.
